The Outcasts Overcome

Standard

So this week I had to do an essay comparing and contrasting Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson (one of the best books you’ll ever read) and The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne. I got really into it and I’m really REALLY proud of it, so here it is:

The Outcasts Overcome

Have you ever noticed the similarities and differences between the main characters in the book The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne and Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson? The main character in The Scarlet Letter is Hester Prynne, a puritan woman from Boston in 1850 who had an affair with a minister and is charged with adultery. Melinda Sordino, the main character in the book Speak, is a shy, solitary teenager who goes through the unimaginable, being raped. Both of these characters suffer pain and despair, but they still find a way to fit into society again. Even though these books were written over a hundred years apart the main characters have similar problems that they overcome in different ways.

Hester Prynne is the main character in the book The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne. She is charged with adultery after having a child, Pearl, when her husband was supposedly dead. For her crime she must wear the scarlet letter “A”, stand on the scaffold, and is shunned by everyone in her society, leaving her with only her child for company. She is an outcast, almost has her child taken away, and must be publically humiliated, but still she stays strong and goes through with her punishment. She uses her skillful sewing and charity work to reconnect her with society. For her good deeds she is given the choice of taking off the scarlet letter but refuses, instead the towns people changed the meaning of the scarlet letter from “Adultery” to “Able” for her capability, showing that she has overcome her past and the judgment of her community.

The main character in the book Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson is Melinda Sordino, a very solitary teenager who goes through the tragedy of being raped and is shunned by her peers because she will not say why she called the police at a party. When she goes to high school on the first day everyone, including her so called friends, think of her as “the girl who called the cops at the party” and refused to notice her existence. She will not speak and avoids people if possible. Unlike Hester, Melinda has nobody, her parents are too preoccupied with their jobs to understand what is going on with their daughter, her friends leave her, and along with these things the person that raped her, Andy Evans, is still torturing her. She has the chance to reintegrate with society but at first refuses to do so. Eventually she sticks up for herself which empowers her to tell her friend, Rachelle, that she was raped. Her speaking out and her art class helps her reconnect with society. Andy Evans attempts to rape her again, but this time Melinda is able to protect herself. In the end she overcomes her past and her fear giving her the friends, self-confidence, and happiness of her old life.

These incredible books tell the stories of two strong, young women that must overcome their society and judgment. They must subdue their feelings of despair and loneliness that go along with being an outcast. Even though they go through similar problems their reactions are very different. Hester Prynne immediately uses her skill to reconnect with her society, while Melinda Sordino is fearful and is much less enthusiastic to reconnect with her society. Hester also does not care about what her society thinks, while Melinda yearns to talk to someone about her problems.

There are many similarities between The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne and Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, but there are also many differences. Hester Prynne, the main character of The Scarlet Letter, is a nineteenth century puritan that is charged with adultery after having a child with a minister. The main character of Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson is Melinda Sordino, a solitary teenager who goes through the tragedy of being raped. Both young women go through the despair and loneliness of being shunned. Yet, somehow, they find a way to reconnect with their society and go on with their lives. Both of these characters are outcasts that overcome the judgment of their societies. Even though these books were written so many years apart, the main characters have similar problems that they overcome in different ways.

The Election

Standard

So from what I hear Barrack Obama has been re-elected as our President. Well, I guess you people want America to be a living hell. I would like 1 person to name something good that he has done, because all I see is rising taxes, gas prices, and my parents blood pressure. Because believe it or not they work for a living and we are barely getting by as it is, so how about some of you people who are sitting on your But’s try to get a job and pay your own way in life because my parents are tired of paying for you! This world would be 10 times better if people would try to make it better for everyone.  There is a whole other problem besides the fact that he is a crappy President and it is that people are voting for him because of his race, which is extremely stupid because if you haven’t noticed he has put more debt on the USA than all the other Presidents combined (and it’s only been 4 years). I mean, I don’t care if the guy/girl up for President is purple if he/she gets the job done then I’ll vote for him/her. So thank you idiots … you’ve just doomed the United States of America… I hope you’re happy.

The End of The World

Standard

I would like to show my views on the world ending. I think its a bunch of crap and scam to get money. Yes the Mayans made the calendar and it ended at 2012 but if your going to look at it that way the Mayans didn’t have leap year so we would all be dead by now. Who are they to tell when the world is going to end because the ” numbers tell them so.” The person who says that is a con artists and the people who believe it are idiots. The world will end when God is ready for his children to come home and when that happens it will be when He is ready and when He feels that it is time to end the world. So when December 22nd comes around don’t be suprised. Sorry to have upset any of you but these are my opinions, if you don’t like them don’t read my blog. Have a nice day. 🙂

B-SHOC: Christian rapper

Standard

image
B-SHOC is a inspirational Christian rapper from Georgia, but he wasn’t always that way. He went from successful night club artist to fully devoting his life to Jesus Christ. So through a very long process he realized that he would never be happy unless God was in his life and for that reason he gives all the glory to God.

He has three albums, Shoc the World, High Voltage, and Against the Flow, with several hits and some incredible songs that are not on the cds(at least i couldn’t find it). If the song “Hellbound” is out by him I would really like to know how to get it.

When I first heard of B-SHOC I was excited because my youth group was coming and when I got to the back to school bash for my county I knew I was right to be.

His story is truly touching and his love and passion for Jesus and rap has brought him a long way. And, as his songs say, he asks God to use him so he can help the people who are lost or people that have never heard of God their creater, the son, and the holy ghost.

If you are lost today listen to his music and maybe you will find Him or maybe B-shoc will just give you encouragement to stand up and find your passion. Hope he inspires you the way he did me.

MTV Movie Awards

Standard

The MTV Movie Awards were great and the awards were deserving for the most part. I’m not a very big twilight fan so if I offend anyone I’m sorry.

The Movie of the Year Award went to Breaking Dawn Part 1. Not my choice at all. I voted for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows but you people decided otherwise.

The Best Female Actor Award went to Jennifer Lawrence. Extremely happy about that one.

The Best Male Actor Award went to Josh Hutcherson. Happy about this one too.

Both are for the movie Hunger Games.

The Best Breakthrough Performance Award went to Shailene Woodley for The Descendants.

Best Cast Award (and my personal favorite) went to the cast of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (Tom Felton, Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grit)

The Best On-screen Transformation went to Elizabeth Banks (Effie Trinket) for Hunger Games.

The Best Fight Award went to Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson vs. Alexander Ludwig for the Hunger Games.

The Best Kiss Award went to Robert Pattenson and Kristen Stewart for Breaking Dawn part 1 (not my choice).

Best On-screen Dirt Bag went to Jennifer Aniston for Horrible Bosses.

Best Hero went to Daniel Radcliffe for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2. ❤

The new Trailblazer Award went to Emma Stone. 🙂

The 2012 MTV Generation Award went to Johnny Depp.

Best Gut-Wrenching Performance award went to Bridesmaids. 🙂

Best Music Award went to LMFAO for party rock anthem.

Best Comedic Performance when to Melissa McCarthy for Bridesmaids.

The awards weren’t the only reason to watch the 21 Annual Movie Awards.

There were performances by…

FUN.,

Wiz Khalifa,

And the Black Keys feat. Johnny Depp.

The Movie Awards were Hosted by Russel Brand.

Over all the awards were good, the entertainment was great, but Twilight shouldn’t have gotten any awards. How did Kristen Stewart become an actress any, buying her way in? It would be a good movie if it wasn’t for her. Sorry all the Twilight fans, a piece of wood has more emotion than she does. #potterheadforever!
